Temporary Anchorage Devices, or TADs, are a relatively new addition to orthodontics. TADs are small screw-type devices that are placed in the gum and bone tissue with a topical gel or small amount of local anesthesia. The benefit of TADs to the orthodontist and patient is that they allow for tooth movement of a single tooth or group of teeth with no unwanted movement of adjacent teeth that are in good position.
While TADs are not used on every patient, they provide a very effective and efficient tool in those cases which require a very specific type of tooth movement. If TADs are needed, they are usually planned for based on the diagnosis and treatment planning prior to any orthodontic treatment.
